Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson

Was born in Longhorn, Texas in 1933 and started playing live poker after his dream of being a professional athlete was shattered along with his knee. He travelled to all the poker playing states to get in bigger and better prize games. He has played professional poker for more than 50 years.

With ten WSOP gold championship bracelets to his name so far, the show still isn’t over for this prolific poker player and he was the first player to earn $ 1 million in a tournament. He has tied with both Phil Helmuth and Johnny Chan and is only one of four players who have won WSOP events back to back. He did this in 1976 and 77 and with the exact same hand. This poker hand is now also legendary and is named after him; a “Doyle Brunson” is a full house of 10′s full of 2′s, or deuces, as poker players call them.

Doyle Brunson gave regular poker players the opportunity to truly learn the secrets of professional players when he published Super/System, Poker Wisdom of a Champion and Super/System 2. This insight my have damaged many a pro poker players advantages, but he continues to play at the WSOP and in some of the biggest poker games around the world.

Phil Helmuth

Phil Helmuth doesn’t seem to have a “poker” AKA but is known as the “poker brat”. After Stu Unger, he was the next to break the record for being the youngest WSOP winner ever. He attended University in Wisconsin for three years before leaving to play poker as a pro. When he won the WSOP main event at age 25 this was as an unknown against Johnny Chan who was defending his two-time title in 1989. Apparently he is the best Texas Hold’em player currently living. He is controversial, and apparently has a reputation for being unable to lose graciously – his quotes are famous for reiterating this. He has been commentator in Celebrity Poker Showdown as well as starred in many poker tournaments; holds 10 WSOP championship gold bracelets, is reputed to have won $8,325,000 in live tournaments. He may still become known as the greatest poker player of all time. He still has time on his side and is probably already the best known face in world poker.

Johnny Chan

Johnny Chan ties with Phil Helmuth and Doyle Brunson as the holder of 10 WSOP gold bracelets. He was born in China in 1962, and wasn’t much older than Phil Helmuth when he won his first WSOP main event. His family had emigrated to Arizona where they owned restaurants and Johnny got his first taste of gambling at the age of 16. He dropped out of college a couple of years later to move to Las Vegas and play professional poker. He credits much of his success to the fact that pros had not played against an Asian poker player and could not read his “tells”. He is a prolific poker writer and player still and received induction to the Poker Hall of Fame way back in 2002.

If you have a smaller pair, such as a pair of nines, it is more likely that someone else has a better hand than you. You shouldn’t pay too much to see the flop, and if you don’t hit a three of a kind you shouldn’t really spend more money on that hand. If you sit in an early position you should try to avoid playing the hand.

If you have a hand with two large denominations such as KJ, QT, or AT, you shouldn’t play them if you’re in an early position at a full table. If someone from a late position raise, it could mean that he has a better hand. If you have hands like AK or AQ, you can raise to get opponents to fold.

If you have two suited cards in your hand it’s good to also think about the denominations. Smaller denominations make cards less valuable, while the higher denominations can make other great combinations. You don’t want to risk someone else having a better straight or flush, so just play high cards of the same color.

There were some very noticeable presences at the recent ICEi Exhibition last week in London, one we have already spoken about quite extensively – Canadian software developer – Chartwell games, and their new rapid deployment technology as well as new slots and live casino offering. They also showcased their new back office technology and it all went down rather well. What is quite unique about the live casino games offering is that it comes from the casino stable of the Stanley Ho gambling dynasty and the action is streamed live from a Manila land casino. This new product is also available in a variety of languages.

Another noticeable presence at ICEi was NYX Interactive – these Isle of Man developers have a new range of games to look forward to. These are Casino War and European Roulette HR which as we know are non-slots games, and slots include Thunderstruck 2, Atlantic Quest, Funland Festival, Cherries Diner, and Haunting Harry which looks like a lot of fun. Greentube is an Austrian company and they are famed far and wide for their fantasy racing games. These are masterfully depicted with outstanding high resolution graphic display and VW featured prominently. They also offer a range of slots of various themes from Novomatic; Greentube acquired Novomatic just last year which now allows them access to a series of slots that have been converted from land casino to online use. They are obviously keen on the suffix “deluxe” and had on display Book of Ra Deluxe, Columbus Deluxe, Katana Deluxe and Just Jewels Deluxe amongst other deluxe delights.

Passoker was shown a great deal of interest at ICEi and understandably so. This is a new sports themed game that was only released last year and we feel will command a great deal of attention from sports fans. On the final day of the exhibit Passoker announced a new deal with online gaming specialist “Zukido” who will be providing mini-games to Passoker.

Scratchino is new too and this is an innovative scratch card type game specifically built for mobile gaming. Apparently this is not just any old Flash Port, it is a fully comprehensive facility to take advantage of sophisticated mobile capabilities. It offers a platform-independent web application and its appeal ensured a stream of very interested visitors to the stand. This company also boasts that they have some exclusive mobile licenses as well as being available in multi-currency and multi-language formats.

Meeting and greeting visitors at ICEi we found a few of the major regulatory jurisdiction include a revamped Khanawake, who are due to release new draft regulations, as well as the Isle of Man. Manx Telecom was well represented and they revealed that they are about to invest £20 million to build their second data centre on the island. This centre will apparently offer four times the capability of the existing facility, which demonstrates the Island’s determination to win a larger slice of the e-gambling pie. Believe it or not the existing facility is now completely full, years ahead of its forecast schedule.

The 2001 Aussie Millions tournament kicked off at the Crown Casino in Melbourne and the eyes of the poker world are fixed on the tables, curious who will take this year’s win worth over $200k that goes with the main title. 20 events are taking place ranging from $550 to $100k. So far, Tony Dunst, Michael Greco and Annette Obrestad have been eliminated already, to name just a few renowned poker pros that faced an early bust. Leading after Day 2 was Martin Drewe from New Castle, Australia. The player has three significant finished on his poker CV by now, all of them achieved at the ANZPT Melbourne in October 2010.

One of coveted titles in the poker universe has recently been awarded to Roberto Romanello at teh 2010 EPT hosted in Prague, Czech Republic. No stranger to superstitions, he wore several “lucky items” during the tournament, boosting his self-confidence and helping him to keep a masterly face throughout the whole event. Roberto has takes quite some credits in poker so far, his last memorable victory being a televised tournament in Cardiff, where he left the table with $120,000 in his pocket. During this year’s EPT, he needed to eliminate a total of 563 players to achieve the top spot and get the €640,000 prize that went with his first-place title.

When he put his racket in Castres from Spain, where he was working as a dealer at the casino for two years and used to deal for blackjack, poker and roulette, Styven Mazzella started to look for a club to live again his second great love which is tennis. A discipline with which he had taken some distance to follow his girlfriend, his first love, on the land of Nadal, Ferrer, Ferrero, Verdasco and Almagro and other players. His researches on the Internet will lead him to find his past. ”Through the internet I found the site of Mr. Canthelou that I was using in my youth when I was teaching the basics of tennis, and get more exercises for my students. “I saw that the club was friendly, I thought it was useless to look for another club and I was going to go into this one.”

Work and projects

By approaching the Tennis Club of Travet, Styven found back the atmosphere of small clubs in Lot-et-Garonne where he gained experience at 12 years old. At this age, Styven had already played seven different sports. ”In every sport I arrived quickly at a good level (…) but in most of them, I was a little bit bored but not in tennis because there is always a chance to improve your level, there is always someone better than you.”

Since the 1st of September, the human adventure that he shares through the sport association has taken a new dimension to Styven who has been hired as a maintenance agent. His new job will require him to be available for members of the club, organize youth activities, organise, monthly, theme meals for adults, maintaining the training court and get it practicable for the player. Administratively, it will help Franz Canthelou on many things. Styven may also work on missions as an initiator of tennis. It would be the opportunity for him to start a new project such as a tennis teacher.

“In exchange, the club gives me a lot more that I was expected and offer me the chance to realise one of my dreams: become a tennis teacher. This contract will allow me to pass all the qualifications that I want: Referee Tournament, etc… And also, observe how a club works.”

When he was Years old, the player was ranked 15/2, today his ranking is not so good but the player is very motivated to get his ranking back and expect to be 15/1 at the end of the year. At a recent tournament, he had injured his ankle – his weak point – just before a game to go … because he wanted to fill up his water bottle. We understand, now, why his models such as Sampras and Federer are directly serve their refreshments at their chairs.

This is a true story of a guy who has a lot of motivation and believes in what he desires.
